St John’s Hospice, Wirral
Complete Redesign & Refurbishment of the Outpatients Lounge
ClientOverview
St John’s Hospice in Wirral provides essential palliative and end-of-life care for patients and their families, offering comfort, dignity, and support in a compassionate environment. As part of its ongoing commitment to patient wellbeing, the Hospice identified a need to transform its ageing Outpatients Lounge into a welcoming, therapeutic space aligned with modern care standards.
OurApproach
From the outset, collaboration was central. Our design team worked closely with hospice staff and management to fully understand how the lounge was used day-to-day. We conducted site assessments, developed design concepts, and provided detailed visualisations to ensure the proposed scheme met both emotional and functional needs.
ProjectBrief
The Hospice team approached us to redesign and refurbish the Outpatients Lounge, a space used daily by patients, families, and staff. The goal was to create a comfortable, uplifting, and functional environment that reflected the Hospice’s warmth and care ethos, while improving flow, accessibility, and practicality for clinical and support staff.
KeyObjectives:
- Modernise the interior while retaining a homely, calming atmosphere
- Enhance comfort and accessibility for patients of all abilities
- Create flexible zones for waiting, consultation, and family interaction
- Use durable, hygienic, and easy-to-maintain materials suitable for healthcare settings
- Minimise disruption to daily hospice operations during refurbishment
DesignHighlights:
- Soft, calming colour palette inspired by nature to promote relaxation
- Zoned seating areas for privacy and small group interaction
- Custom joinery and storage solutions to maintain a clutter-free environment
- Improved lighting design
- High-quality, healthcare-grade finishes for durability and easy cleaning
Delivery& Execution
The refurbishment was completed on schedule and within budget. Our project management team coordinated all works to ensure minimal disruption to hospice operations. Sensitive handling was paramount, from scheduling noisy works around clinical hours to maintaining clear communication with staff and volunteers.
Outcome
The transformed Outpatients Lounge now provides a warm, welcoming, and uplifting environment for patients and families. The new design has improved comfort, functionality, and accessibility, while creating a space that truly reflects St John’s Hospice’s compassionate values.
